'I feel like I’m on holiday, but this is our home!’

Last year our clients, based in the Marlborough Downs, approached our team of Cotswold architects in the hope of extending their bungalow. Having inherited the bungalow, the couple were keen to make it their home, yet it simply wasn’t large enough to accommodate their growing family, so changes had to be made. The brief was to turn the existing property into a large family house, with central social spaces, a playroom and a more formal, toy free, living room. As the premises fell within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on the edge of a picturesque village, the design was to incorporate a modern, contemporary edge to the building without it looking out of place in-situ with neighbouring property.

Our clients moved into the finished bungalow overhaul last week, and as you can see from the quote above, they are thrilled with the results! No longer a small bungalow, the property now extends over two floors and boasts very comfortable family accommodation. The top floor houses three bedrooms including a spacious master suite with walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom. The view from this room is simply spectacular. One wall is dominated by glazing, including impressive corner glazing, overlooking a flat roof, planted to create a haven for visiting insects, and the owners will be able to lie in bed and watch the light changing over acres of unspoilt Wiltshire countryside.

Walking down the bespoke staircase with glass sides, the light and bright atmosphere of the whole property becomes apparent. The downstairs accommodation is equally, if not more so, luxurious. The main family living area benefits from the same view as the master bedroom and to really make the most of this we designed the rear wall to be made entirely of sliding glazed doors, with corner glazing and a stone terrace to step out onto, truly bringing the outdoors in. From this main social space there are steps up into the kitchen area with all modern conveniences and elegant finishing touches, such as copper pendant lighting, range stove and locally hand-painted tiles. This ground floor also houses the more formal living room, a study, fourth bedroom, wet room, boot room and bathroom, not to mention the much-desired playroom that the two young boys are thrilled with!

From the front elevation the property appears largely unchanged, but from the side and rear profiles the contemporary architectural design comes into its own. The extensive glazing offsets the brickwork and blends with the cedar cladding, which will weather into silver tones over the coming months.

We are thrilled to have been able to work on this project and to see our clients move into the home of their dreams.
