New house development continues in north Oxfordshire

Originally a partially wooded and lawned area of land, planning permission was gained within the curtilage of a grade 2 listed building by the current owners to develop the site into a unique, one off, architecturally designed home.  We worked closely with Cherwell District Council’s conservation department to ensure the proposed development would sit sympathetically within this conservation area, helping to enhance it, while not deterring from the stone buildings within the village. Through the use of quality, natural materials, and a design based on the traditional, local style, it sits formally within the grounds, remaining understated compared to many of the grand properties in the area. Despite this traditional and reserved outer layer, it is able to hint at a more modern and striking interior.

As the plot of land is surrounded by mature trees it was deemed important to really capture the axial views throughout the house, providing the occupants with a changing view as the seasons pass. By creating a double story shaft, which runs through the property as the main corridor, the principle axial view is expressed. This glazed area fills the double height entrance hall with light, giving guests a real sense of the building’s connection to its setting in the landscape. This dabbled light infiltrates the building via the length of the corridor.

The interior of the property displays an excellent balance of larger entertaining space and more private, family rooms. Guests visiting the property are met with both the formal dining room and sitting room which have been designed to work together as an open space if required. Towards the end of the main corridor is the family room and kitchen diner, situated below the master suite and overlooking the private gardens. This change from formal to private areas is also expressed in the building materials used, with the formal area a traditional coursed rubble stone, and the private areas an oak structure. Over time this oak will weather into place and become silver in colour.

The structure makes use of all available space, using both the attic and basement areas to house more bedrooms and therefore ensuring the building achieves a balance which both justifies the unique site upon which it sits without over imposing. By using the latest energy saving technologies the home will be both easy, and efficient to maintain, and easily upgradable in the future.
