Our Oxford architects were called to a picturesque Buckinghamshire village to survey a cottage with a view to having it refurbished and extended. The existing property is one of three farm buildings that had been renovated back in the 90s and it sits on a good-sized plot alongside a barn-like structure which is currently used for storage. The barn has had minor repairs made to it, to fix a leaking roof and replace rotting timbers however, it would need significant work to fully restore it. Whilst the bungalow itself is in reasonable condition, it does need refurbishing. The internal layout does not allow the best use of space and the lighting is poor. Our Oxford architects looked at the possibility of creating an extension to meet the barn structure, in turn converting it to create one comfortable modern family home.

The completed proposal is an attractive and stylish architecturally designed home. By incorporating the barn, we have allowed for a light and airy four-bedroom property; the rooms are spacious, with countryside views. The living accommodation is in an open plan arrangement, the kitchen central with clear lines of sight across the living and dining areas. The new link between the existing bungalow and the old barn provides the entrance space, with steps up to it, allowing a separate hall, rather than the occupants and guests walking straight into the main circulation area.

Externally we have rearranged the parking to allow more room for manoeuvring. This redistribution of space has also allowed an area for a new external terrace, a comfortable outdoor extension providing a welcome entertaining area.

We are thrilled that the clients were enthusiastic with our architecturally designed refurbishment and extension and we have now submitted the design to the planning officers. We will, of course, keep you up to date with their verdict, but we hope to see this property move ahead to the build stage in the not too distant future.
