Unique Forest House

An architecturally designed woodland dwelling

Client brief
Our clients asked us to design and create a unique, architecturally designed dwelling situated in woodland near Painswick. They asked that the proposed house replace a timber clad construction currently situated on this distinctive wooded site and requested a bespoke design.

The process
We suggested two parallel elements to this property, allowing good sized living accommodation without the usual mass that accompanies such a large family home, such as wide gables and high eaves.

Both the design and construction of the building have been developed to ensure a sympathetic approach to the surroundings. This basic shape will be constructed from structural timber, based on a grid system, which will allow the building to be elevated and suspended on timber posts, lightly touching the forest floor and mitigating the need for extensive foundations. The structural timber frame used in construction will be visible in the envelope of the building and will be allowed to weather naturally, providing silver tones, and will be punctuated by floor to ceiling glazing, drawing in the outside.  The building addresses the views across the valley to the south through high-level roof lights that are located within the first floor circulation, across a double height space.

The northern element of the building shall be more of a more solid construction with a natural, coursed, rubble stone finish to the external walls. There is less requirement for openings on this side, due to the site sloping upwards to a north-west boundary wall which the building runs parallel to. This part of the house shall provide the functional/working areas of the dwelling.

The result
We are excited to announce planning permission has been approved and this build is now well underway. The forest house will not only sympathise with the natural surroundings in appearance also utilise the best environmental sustainable technologies and energy saving technologies to create an efficient dwelling that is eco-friendly to live in and can easily be upgraded time and time again.
