A Room with a View

— 07 January 2025

The built environment is elementally about shelter. Contextually responsive Architecture is about creating a shelter that is informed by its surroundings and environment.

William Green Architects enjoys designing buildings that are contextually responsive as it provides a deep link and connection to a place. The context provides direction for location, massing, material palette, and orientation.

Buildings connect with context and are designed to be experienced three dimensionally. Bringing the outside in, will often enrich the experience and the connection. Spaces will unfold and links between spaces create flow and direction, leading somewhere. This journey is one of many performed by a user of a building. As Architects we aim to make this daily journey an experience that connects one to the space, the view ahead and beyond. This experience becomes familiar to the daily user and this connection to the experience created by the building design is hugely important to us and our clients. We therefore carefully design the space sequence, the flow and the views through and beyond.

The powerful thing is, that when the design really works, even an ordinary object, activity can be really delightful. The aligning of a design to celebrate something, creates reason and this helps elevate the ordinary which in turn connects with the context.

A view is a fabulous asset to have. For Architects, it is about what the view means and how it affects the design. To have a view is a privilege and a challenge. Sometimes it is too obvious to open the whole space up to the view, detracting from perspective and context. Maybe it is more interesting to connect the space to the view by picking out an aspect of the view and then carefully designing the journey into and through the space to reveal this selected aspect. How this is achieved and through what type of aperture is the beauty of design.

All of us at William Green Architects enjoy bringing this deep connected thought to our projects. We are passionate about having like-minded clients who appreciate architecture and the journey of design; who appreciate the view ahead and beyond, and ultimately a connection to a place.
