The kitchen is the heart of the house. A well-used saying for a reason and an exciting opportunity for Architects, as the good design makes easy gains here, overtly seen by all.

William Green Architects enjoys designing kitchens and understanding what that means to a project and how it influences how our clients live in their houses.

Kitchens are where we all head when we arrive home. There is a sequence of arrival, with the initial destination for family members being the kitchen. It acts as the hub and gatekeeper to the family’s presence. The kitchen has evolved to become the epicentre of the house and connecting activities have been drawn in. The close-knit nature of these relating activities encourages an open-plan layout. Often the homeowners only experience of this plan form. As Architects, we enjoy the power of open plans within the home. The space afforded enables more dramatic design events, for example a feature screening wall, a volume space, long internal views, external connections, material pallet arrangement and patterns. All helping to enrich and inform the experience of being in the kitchen.

Being so central, the design of the kitchen cabinetry really can respond to the design language, amplifying or as a standalone feature. Different design solutions achieve carefully orchestrated results. The unit and worktop design provides a lovely opportunity to add layers to a design that adds interest, intrigue, and delight. The real beauty is in the detail, considering how the arrangement works with the architecture, how it connects, flows and weaves into the fabric of the home.

We feel less is more, a simply sculpted kitchen with simple and balanced lines derived from careful detailing is all it takes as the setting, arrangement and lighting will set it apart. Well designed, the kitchen will feel right, down to the last detail. The view from the sink to the journey to the pantry, designed kitchens are rewarding and lasting. The patination of age only amplifying the success of the original design choices.
